The framework for this monthly book discussion group is a wee bit unconventional. Rather than having all members read and then meet to discuss the same book at each session, we will instead meet monthly to share the contents of our individual “commonplace books.” A commonplace book is an ancient term for a form of a journal where you can collect whatever quotes, lines of poetry, ideas, information, and/or inspiration you have gleaned from your reading, listening, and observation. Commonplace books have been used by readers, writers, and artists for centuries. Our hope is that a commonplace book discussion group will provide space for a wider dialogue about a variety of books and reading experiences. This group is open to anyone who wants to attend, even if you don’t keep a commonplace book and just want to join in the discussion or simply listen to what other folks are currently reading. More information about the history and practice of keeping a commonplace book can be found here, here, and here.
