Oh, friends...I have been trying to get this post written for an embarrassingly long time. There is much that I need to convey to all of you who have so graciously donated and shared with us in myriad ways (far beyond our expectations) what this place means to you...and the community. Please know this: I never intended to start this crowdfunding effort and then seemingly drop it like a hot potato (communication-wise) after a little more than a month. Truth is, my timing was extremely poor (launching this just as the holiday season was beginning…really?) and my ignorance level was high about oh…so much.

I would guess that almost everyone who has spoken with me about this business venture since its inception has heard me describe the experience as being on a "steep learning curve" - that descriptor continues to hold for me. But this step into the world of crowdfunding as a method to help correct our financial deficits has taken me way beyond the steep curve metaphor and straight onto a sheer rock face. I have come to understand - and I admit this with all humility - that the process of deciding to ask for help plus the construction of that very public ask was more energy-consuming as well as psychologically depleting than I was prepared for or ever imagined. And this is the truly humbling part - I launched this campaign without fully understanding the investment of time and energy required to make it successful in terms of reaching our initial financial goal...an investment I've struggled to make given the already high management and operational demands I juggle daily. I also came to the uncomfortable realization that publicly asking for help once was one thing, but repeatedly doing so...to keep our needs up in front of people...was an aspect of this process I didn't know how to navigate. So, in this crowdfunding effort, much like a neophyte rock climber, I have felt stuck in place, struggling to find the next secure foothold that will help me continue the climb.

Sometimes you just need to retrace your steps back down and re-assess.

So here's where we are at present: While we have fallen far short of our initial goal, the funds that were donated helped us successfully cover our costs through the holiday season as well as pay some overdue tax bills from the previous quarter. We can't thank you enough for this generosity. By helping us bolster our cash flow during these crucial months - as well as assisting us in spreading the word about Ballyhoo more widely throughout the community - we experienced a successful holiday season that has allowed us to pay down a small portion of our debt. This coupled with a helpful renegotiation of our major business loan terms has provided us a little breathing room. We are not out of the woods yet, but we can now see more light coming through the trees ahead of us. (I know...first I'm climbing a mountain and now I'm in the woods :)

We're now at work exploring other options that will allow our most avid supporters to continue to contribute to the financial well-being of this spunky counter-cultural endeavor here in the wilds of Mid-Michigan...likely a membership program of some kind that includes some cool beans perks - we just haven't quite figured out all the details or how we'll facilitate it yet. We'll keep you posted.

So this will be the final post of our "Buy Me a Coffee" campaign. The page will be closed at the end of business on February 29. Please know that we are forever grateful to all of you for your immense generosity, oh-so-kind words, and ongoing loving support of Ballyhoo.

Indie Bookstore Day is an annual celebration of the contributions of indie bookstores. It is also a day for us to celebrate our phenomenal community of book-loving customers. In addition, for each book purchased or special-ordered on that day, our patrons will earn a raffle ticket to enter our (first time ever!) drawing for a custom-curated Ballyhoo Basket Bundle!

"Come Home to Alma!" Friday 12/10

We hope you will visit us on Friday, December 10 for the welcome return of the annual "Come Home to Alma!" event to be held from 5-9pm. We will have free gift-wrapping available for the entire evening as well as live entertainment provided by members of the Gratiot String Association from 6-7:45pm. There will also be the opportunity to fold a paper peace crane to add to our holiday tree.

"Come Home to Alma!" is a lovely community holiday tradition that helps provide a much-needed boost to local small businesses - please join us for the festivities!

Can you believe it? We are tickled pink to announce that Ballyhoo Books will soon occupy the entire retail space at 111 West Superior Street! Dawn & John Hall - the beloved proprietors of Treasures - have announced their long-awaited retirement and will close the doors to their vintage retail shop on December 10th. The expansion plans for Ballyhoo include a coffeehouse with ample space for individual study, small group gatherings, as well as a more generous capacity to hold events. Also included in the design plan for the expansion will be additional much-needed storage and office space. Stay tuned for updates on the project!

There is a wonderful holiday tradition in Iceland that combines the giving and enjoyment of both books and chocolate on Christmas Eve. Independent Bookstore Day - Sat. April 24!

Independent Bookstore Day (IBD) is traditionally a one-day national party that takes place at indie bookstores across the country on the last Saturday in April (some of you may recall that our store opening was held on the rescheduled-due-to-the-pandemic 2020 IBD date - August 29). In non-pandemic times, this event would be an opportunity to host authors, book launches, and all manner of fun and unique activities, but as we’re still in the midst of a pandemic (with a surge right here in central Michigan), things will have to be a little different this year. As it continues to be unsafe to hold large indoor events/group gatherings, we will sadly have to forego all that wonderfulness this time round, but our storefront will be open* from 10am-8pm on Saturday, April 24 for your browsing pleasure. We have some lovely limited edition IBD gift items available and swag freebies to share with you so please plan to stop by to help us celebrate!

*Be advised, dear readers, that in addition to requiring the proper wearing of facemasks, social distancing, and hand "goop" application at the entry, we continue to maintain an in-store customer maximum limit of ten (10) persons...so it’s possible you may have to wait a few minutes to gain access to the store if it’s busy on Saturday - we do have comfy benches out front :)

Ballyhoo Book Discussion Event

With the promise of warmer weather on the way, we are pleased to announce our very own first-ever book discussion opportunity hosted here (outdoors) at Ballyhoo Books on Tuesday, May 18 at 6:00 pm!

Our first book selection for discussion was inspired by the overwhelming response to the U.S. youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman's recitation of her poem "The Hill We Climb" at President Biden's inaugural. As serendipity would have it, we had just recently fallen in love with a little book titled How Poetry Can Change Your Heart by spoken-word poets Andrea Gibson and Megan Falley and decided in the afterglow of the inaugural poetry love-fest that this was the book we wanted as our first offering...and being able to announce it during National Poetry Month is just icing on the proverbial cake.

To be honest, we want our customers to choose whichever purchasing option works best for them. While we receive a smaller percentage of commission per book at our online shop, Bookshop makes up the difference for us in myriad other ways - including annual share payments from the revenue pool they set aside to be distributed bi-annually to participating independent booksellers – like us! The learning continues...

Managing a small retail business in the midst of a pandemic is crazy complicated...much more so than we anticipated (we must humbly admit).

We want more than anything for our staff and customers to be safe, but operating entirely on an appointment-only basis (while being staff-reduced) has grown too unwieldy for us to manage well. So beginning Saturday, January 16 we're re-opening the storefront with a reduced maximum customer limit to see how that works for us. We will, of course, maintain our strict observance of COVID-19 safety protocols - face masks, proper social distancing, and hand "goop" application at the entry are still required. We will also continue to offer curbside service when needed. And for those customers more comfortable with the appointment-only option for in-store shopping, we will be reserving the hours of 6-8pm for appointment-only shopping. Appointments must be made at least 24-hour's in advance.

Our regular store hours will continue to be (until this plague is over...or heaven forbid disintegrates further) Monday-Saturday 10am - 6pm.

MLK Day Virtual Poetry Slam!

Alma College invites community members to join the Alma College Department of English and the Center for Student Opportunity for a virtual poetry slam in honor of the Rev. Remember what we said about being patient with us as our store operations evolve during this crazy time? We hope you'll forgive this second email in a week, but we think you may be pleased to hear that in addition to online shopping, phone orders, and curbside service, we're pleased to announce that we will now offer "Browse & Shop" appointments in 30-minute increments at Ballyhoo! These appointments will be limited to a maximum of 5 people (from the same household) and hand sanitizer "goop" application at entry plus (as always) face masks are required. One hour advance notice needed for scheduled appointments.

But while we are temporarily closed to in-store browsing and sales, we are open to receiving merchandise orders and payment via phone during the revised hours listed below - we also have curbside pickup service available during these hours:

We'll save a longer exposition about the whys and wherefores of all of this for a later newsletter edition...it's all a bit too raw right now anyway - but please know that we made the decision to close to in-store shopping before we were mandated to with eyes wide open. We'll focus instead on just explaining how we intend to conduct business and best serve our customers during these unprecedented times.

Here's a bullet-list of things you need to know in order to help support this fledgling small business during this crisis:

Any books you purchase through our affiliate Bookshop.org will be delivered directly to your home or any other address you indicate. And they tell us digital gift cards - as well as gift wrapping - will be available soon!
To place phone orders to our store, call 989.763.3704. If you are prompted to leave a message, please simply state your name, number, and the best time to reach you. We will call you back as soon as possible.
You can also email us at info@ballyhoobooks.com to request we call you to facilitate an order.
When ordering by phone any merchandise currently in-stock at the store, we can either process your order via credit card over the phone or you may give us your card, check, or cash to pay for your purchases when staff meets you curbside at the store. No need to leave your car!
All special orders for books not currently in stock at the store require prepayment before the order can be placed.
When you arrive at the store for an order pickup, please call 989.763.9007 to let us know you have arrived. And to make it a bit easier during this time, you may either park in front of the store or in the back - we will reserve the space closest to our back service entrance for order pickups. Just let us know when you call where you're parked.
We will be operating with reduced staff during this time...so the exercise of patience will be deeply appreciated.
Our operational protocols will likely evolve as we face a steep learning curve here - see the above note about patience.

Woo-hoo! Ballyhoo Opens Sat. August 29!

(Can you believe it?)

What a wild ride this has been! It seems an eon has passed since the seemingly crazy seed idea was planted on January 24, 2020, by John and Dawn Hall of Treasures Resale Shop (my amazing retail space partners and co-conspirators) that I consider doing more than rent a small booth-space from them to sell some of my own books. While owning and managing a bookstore was something I had often fantasized about (what true-blue bibliophile hasn't?), it was not at all the direction I thought I was heading at the time. But here we are...and I'm over the moon happy to have had the opportunity to take yet another creative leap in my vocational life.

The storefront opens at 111 W. Superior St. in downtown Alma this coming Sat. August 29 - we'll be open for the day from 10 am - 9 pm. Because of the COVID-19 state-mandated necessary restrictions on retail business, we are postponing any sort of “grand opening” celebration gathering until some future time when it's safer for us to gather for a shin-dig. But until then - we will be open seven days a week (see hours below) under the following guidelines:

1. A ten (10) person maximum will be allowed in-store at any one time
2. Face masks are required
3. Hand sanitizer will be available and appropriate social distancing will be practiced.

Due to these restrictions, we request that everyone be mindful of others and practice patience as we try to navigate a much-anticipated new store opening under these circumstances. We will have generous business hours so there will hopefully be ample time for you to visit the store during our opening.
