Dust jacket with half-inch closed tear at top of front panel, lower fore-edge just starting, few spots of water staining to lower portion of spine. October 1935 issue of this oversized magazine (14 x 10.5 inches), featuring dramatic cover art of a witch and black cat on a "broomstick" that is actually a rocket, set against a bright orange harvest moon with bats flying about. Very cool. Cover has chipping to the bottom edges and a strip of light discoloration at the top margin, along with owner's stamped address, none of which affects the illustration. Small quarto. pp. (40). Illustrated by Leon Gischia. The lavish productions of the French wine merchant Nicolas have become well known among collectors, most famously a set of three promotional advertisements illustrated by Paul Iribe in 1932. This spiral-bound book, a wine list for 1953, features wonderful modernist illustrations by the French artist Leon Gischia. The 10 full-page and one double-page illustration, all depicting scenes from Don Quixote (the overarching conceit for this particular list), are printed in bold, vibrant colors. A list of the illustrations explains each scene in some detail. Also with decorative ornaments throughout by Alfred Latour, an artist who rose to prominence in Paris in the '20s. Bound in heavy black wrappers bearing a vivid cover illustration of the Quixote figure within the frame of a puppet theater. Slight chip to front hinge at head, else fine in a worn glassine wrapper that has a large closed tear to the back panel.
